Simply put Elyse changed our world beyond imagination. My now 13yr old son was always the extremely busy toddler to which most would say, “He’s a boy!” “They have lots of energy!” I had nothing to compare it to as this was my only child which occurred when I was 35yrs and on my own.

As I reflect there were a multitude of traits presented in early childhood for neurodivergence. Once he started school setting these traits were being posed as terribly negative, therefore in turn making school a less than positive experience. By grade 3, my sweet boy had been brow beat for talking too much, too rough at recess, always in everyone’s business, can’t sit still, to name a few. I would tell the teacher’s repeatedly, he’s consistent, as these were all traits presented at home. Two months into grade 3 we were in a situation which moving classrooms was our last resort. My sweet boy was moved classrooms and that teacher shifted my thought process and heightened awareness as to what ADHD meant and that majority of society are so oblivious to the iceberg underneath the visible traits experienced by outsiders. Even 5 years later this teacher is still in contact with us and attends his hockey games. She was the first to shed light on my special boy.

I had always hoped my son would be into sports, because the game of hockey was in our bloodline. He was the most determined toddler, and his hand eye coordination always turned heads, and this was before I started to foster the development of the sport.

Fast forward to a spring hockey season of 2024 to where my child was becoming vastly emotionally dysregulated and taking penalty after penalty to which in turns hurts him and his team. It was to a point where he was crying getting off the ice between periods, this was unfamiliar territory for me, so clueless as to how to support my child or myself in these moments. Suddenly another parent approached me that I didn’t know very well. The support was offered at once to meet and discuss support options for my son. I had no awareness as to what we were about to embark on, and once again I will say this knowledge was the most powerful experience for both my son and me. We met with Elyse on multiple occasions to guide us with a brand-new vocabulary to understand how/why our brains work and key aspects to ensure success occurs.

Let’s be real, although I felt this was amazing opportunity, there were moments when my son was not having any of it, but we pushed through.
I did all the things suggested along with continuing to educate myself to support my child’s success.

We were taught about a massive concept of self-advocacy and fostering ideas as this will only bring desired success. My 13yr is grasping the idea more of his 2E but still can’t believe when coach after coach “glaze” him as the kids say, as he continues to perform in hockey.

This will be a life long journey, but without Elyse’s expertise and education, we would not have the success we do today thus far.
